HAIR was big, clothes’ shoulders were padded, Michael Jackson was black. And for sure any 1980s mixtape will have the Gloved One’s hits in it. Among these would most likely be “The Lady In My Life” for the purposes of sappy courting — the motive behind creating and giving a mixtape anyway, we’re told. Montblanc is now turning to music from the era which the National Geographic declared as “The Decade That Made Us;” the luxury brand brings out its Meisterstück Soft Grain Mix Tapes Capsule Collection. As today’s hipsters start taking to cassette tapes, Montblanc is also making these things the graphic signature of an ‘80s-inspired line of leatherware.
The latest Meisterstück line’s small leather items are decorated with a cassette print while the large pieces feature a cassette sleeve print. Montblanc explains the design suggests that the former things fit perfectly in the latter, just as a cassette would into its case.
Included in the Meisterstück Mix Tapes collection are a backpack with a padded laptop pocket and adjustable shoulder straps; a portfolio with a zip; a clutch with removable handle and zip closure; a small case travel bag; a wallet with slots for six credit cards and a zip-around wallet for 12 cards; a business card holder and a compact pocket holder; a two-pen pouch and a medium notebook holder; and two key fobs, one with a cassette design and another with a label design that can be used as key rings or as bag charms.
Montblanc says that while the pieces are decidedly playful, these also remind the brand of an era during which it was “moving into new spaces” as it expands its business from jewelry to leather goods while also exploring new designs. Guess the brand also has its own mixtape of memories.
