Sunrise, Sunset

For Krayon, time brings illumination.

Krayon founder and watch designer Rēmi Maillat has made a complication watch that can track sunrises and sunsets anywhere in the world.

Maillat had always liked the idea of a sunrise and sunset complication, but he said it seemed like a waste to make such a device for only one place in the world. That obstacle stayed in place, preventing his mental progress on the matter, until one day, he took the whole concept in an entirely new direction.

Rather than make a wristwatch tied to one specific spot, Maillat made something different: a watch that can calculate exact sunrise and sunset times anywhere in the world. The simplicity of that concept, and the breadth of the implications, are summed up in the watch’s one-word name: the Krayon Everywhere.

The ultimate result of this was a mechanical marvel that can measure the sunrise and sunset from any point on the planet. It’s a highly specialized creation called the Universal Sunrise Sunset caliber, or USS. Six hundred specially-made components are used in this watch. However, for all that, the integrated movement makes the watch sit easy on the wrist. The Everywhere Calendar Watch may look rather complex, but it is surprisingly wearable and easy to set.

Rēmi Maillat takes his inspiration from nature, as so many mathematicians and engineers do. For him, the beauty of the natural world finds expression in the laws of mathematics, which, if you are willing to look, nature reveals to us… well, Everywhere.
