Porsche Celebrates Seventy in Bangkok

A celebration with a Cause

Seventy years is a terrific milestone, and Porsche chose to celebrate this with a bang in the beautiful Thailand. Beginning with the Sportscar Together Day (SCTD) in Bangkok, Porsche featured supercars, superstars, races, and activities. The Show DC Oasis Arena was the venue for more than 300 Porsche cars. The cars were greatly outnumbered by the spectators, of course, as everyone loves to lay eyes on even just one Porsche… can you imagine the turn out to see more than 300?

Guests at the show had more than the cars to keep them entertained. Porsche also brought in Thai singer-songwriter Singto Numchok, R&B idol Lydia Sarunrat, top local disc jockey DJ Yukio, and actress, presenter, and Instagram-celebrity Diana Chungjintanakarn. Celebrating seventy is indeed a sweet deal, and the festivities were capped off by the cutting of a giant cake, actually 400 cupcakes, forming the Porsche logo.

The celebration extended to Bangsaen beach where enthusiasts stayed to watch the street circuit course set out for the Porsche Carrera Cup (PCCA).  Rain couldn’t keep these fans away, and they reveled in the view of the racing Porsche cars. AAS Auto Service (AAS), sole authorized importer and distributor of Porsche cars in Thailand, was beachside at Bangsaen too.

To sweeten the view at the event, Porsche Asia Pacific had a special car flown in from Zuffenhausen, Germany just for the festivities: a Porsche 918 Spyder, owned by the Porsche Museum. This car is a mid-engine plug-in hybrid sportscar that beat the Nürburgring record of seven minutes. Naturally a race car needs to be seen on the track (or street circuit) to be fully appreciated, and Jacky Ickx did a viewing lap of the PCCA circuit before the start of the race.

Many Porsche owners drove their cars from different spots over Southeast Asia just to be in Bangkok for the celebration. Police escorts ushered them in to the area. The cars represented Porsche’s illustrious history and range — the 911, 718 Boxster & 718 Cayman, the Panamera, the Cayenne ,and the Macan.

While Porsche celebrates its past by tracing its history through their various cars, it also looks to the future. Expectations are high for the much-anticipated all electric model from Porsche, the Taycan. No doubt their experience over the last 70 years has given them the needed expertise for this task.

Porsche celebrated its 70th birthday not by accepting gifts, but by giving them. Porsche partnered with the Thai Make-A-Wish Foundation and donated THB 356,000 to the cause. Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes of critically ill children. Porsche enthusiasts will recognize the amount – it is a nod to the Porsche 356 “No. 1” Roadster that started it all for this wonderful company seventy years ago. The cars may be all power and speed, but the company is also all heart.
